We are hosting a small contest sort of thing in our forums, where I’ll review the blogs of the active participants of the forum. The idea of the forum is to just create a community around blogging which will help the members in achieving their blogging goals. Anyway, today i’ll review the blog of our forum member – Scatterbrain A.K.A. Splodge. In this blog review, I’ll try to cover the following aspects of blogging -
1. General blogging point.
2. SEO/On-site optimization
3. Design/Usability of the theme
1. General blogging points
a) About blog- The first look at the blog gives you the idea that it’s a personal blog and the header clearly states that this blog is about life & funny stuff. The blog has the about me page which is a must for every blog as without the information about the author of the blog, the blog looks incomplete.
b) Posting frequency – I’m pretty happy to see the posting frequency of the blog. Scatterbrain posts regularly and ensures that a blog post goes live every couple of days. This ensures that readers regularly get the content and also know that when exactly the blog post will come.
c) Good use of images- I was pretty happy to see that almost every blog post has got an image in it. Images help in making the post look presentable. In fact, Scatterbrain has ensured that all the points of making a blog post presentable are used in the blog post.
d) Outdated WordPress Version – By checking the source code, I found out that ScatterBrain is still using the old version of WordPress and I don’t see any reason for that. I will suggest to upgrade the WordPress installation as fast as possible and it’s possible in flat 2 minutes.
2. SEO/On-Site Optimization
a) No use of Meta Tags- When I checked the source code, I could notice that there was no use of general meta tags. I agree these days meta tags don’t create much difference, however it’s still good to use them as it still helps you a little bit and any help is not waste. ScatterBrain should use All-in-one-seo pack plugin, as that helps in automating these simple tasks.
b) Title of the post – Title of the blog posts are not optimized for SEO. At the moment the post title is in this format -> Splodge! (blog name)->Blog Archive->Post title. With the help of SEO Plugins like All in one seo pack or Platinum SEO pack, this can be changed pretty easily in the format – Post title | Blog Name.
c) No custom permalinks – Recently, i’d written a post where I mentioned the use of permalinks and I think ScatterBrain should implement this change to ensure that the blog posts can rank better in the SERPS.
3. Design/Usability of the theme
a) No sidebar in the inner pages – A sidebar is always good as it helps in displaying recent posts, Links to important pages, Most commentators etc. It just helps in reaching to important parts of the blog in quick way. So, I’ll suggest that one should have a sidebar in the inner pages.
b) Related posts – It’s a good practice if someone displays related posts at the end of every post. If a person who lands up from the search engine to your blog, then there is a big chance that they’ll navigate to the related posts and thus will help in increasing the page views of your blog and will improve the stats. One can also show related posts from the blogosphere too.
c) Header is pretty nice – I like the header of the blog a lot as it improves the blogs look and clearly states that what exactly this blog is all about.
d) Font/Size – Font choice/font size of the blog posts is pretty nice and is very clear to read. Although the font size of comments section is better than the actual blog posts. So, I’ll suggest to make the change in the CSS file to ensure that the blog post’s font is similar to the one you see in the comments section.
So, that sums up the blog review of our wonderful forum user i.e. ScatterBrain. I hope that not only scatterbrain but you will also find these points helpful for your blog.
