One fine day, I get an email from Dreamhost that tells me that how my blog’s database is over loaded. I was literally shocked and thought that it might be some kind of security attack because of which my blog’s database was bloated or could be causing some kind of problem. However, I was relieved to know that it was any security attack on my wordpress blog however, it was bloated because of comment spam.

There were some kind of javascript comment spam attack on my blog and although, I was using Akismet, it wasn’t enough to stop all sorts of problems that I was facing because of those spam bots. Thanks to Dreamhost that they told me that which all plugins will be able to help me resolve this problem.

1. Akismet – This is the most known and trusted spam fighting plugin from Automattic itself. It helps in keeping the spam comments away and thus saves your blog from being bloated. Make sure that you delete spam comments regularly.

2. WP-SpamFree – When I came to know about this plugin, I installed it right then and there. Now, I realize that how effective this plugin is and that how it has helped me in fixing up the problem that DreamHost kindly brought in front of me.

3. Optimize DB – This plugin runs an “optimize table” command to keep the WordPress database clean. This not only helps in speeding it up, it also removes extra “bytes” from the database.

Apart from that you’ll find lots and lots of articles over Google that should keep you busy in making WordPress a little faster and optimization of WordPress, I particularly like Earners blog’s tip.

  1. Thanks for this! Quick question… what plugin and/or service do you use to add RSS feed footer details, like your ebook download, and copyright notice? thanks!

  2. You also should try out Antispam Bee, so you don't get even any Spam, ergo you don't have to delete any Spam anymore. Great Plugin!

  3. My blog crashed because of all the spammers, now i use akismet – thats sh*t works

    • Indeed Akismet is one of the best solution for the spam, however if you add wp-spamfree plugin as well – it will only help you. BTW, thanks for dropping by and I hope to see you regularly over here :)

  4. Could you explain how any of these programs help? To my knowledge All of these programs put your spam in a separate folder for you to go through. If this is not the case (I’ve never used any of these plugins) could you explain what exactly they do with the spam? Do these plugins take it upon themselves to delete it? That would be fine, accept even email can’t do that properly yet. There are always those few that get incorrectly marked.

If what I am believing is however true and they don’t delete the spam, how exactly does this help the database size at all?

  5. Spammers are getting better and better. They generate unique human-like replies and are able to break captchas automatically.

In my experience the only thing that works is captcha + a custom unique bot verification, like “what is the third letter of the name of this website”. And of course comment moderation.

  6. Sorry to hear that people’s blogs crash because of these spammers, who don’t have the decency to first read the texts and then to make comments. I think promoting your site using this tool of commenting to blog is a good idea, but people should focus to make pertinent comments, on subjects that interest them the most. This way the internet would be a community of people, caring about each other, not of robots.
