Great article, a lot of people will be looking to set up there own niche site and Buddypress fits the bill perfectly, oh and thanks for citing my 59 Sites powered by Buddypress!

I love Buddypress too.

Interesting theory (that they’ll eventually develop it as a hosted service)… I agree that sooner or later someone will do that be it Automattic or someone else. Buddypress would be a smart choice to offer a hosted social network like Ning IMO.

Although the code is currently done with that in mind as Andrea pointed out, I don’t see why some developer couldn’t modify it to do that. Of course that would be a pain to keep Buddypress updates if you start modifying it like that… but there’s probably a good solution to use Buddypress in this way without touching any (or too much) of the core. One just has to give it some good thought. Now you have me thinking :)

Of course, I understand that. I wonder how much time it would take for them to achieve those changes… I think it shouldn’t take more time. And moreover it is a kind of suggestion to develop the platform in such a way :)

Right now, the codebase for BuddyPress has no ability for anyone to set it up as a hosted service. This is why you don’t see one. ;)

If they put BuddyPress on a site like wordpress.com right now, there would be “one” buddypress across the entire site, not individually BP’s for each blog. Because the code just isn’t there in BP.
