Ok,

This is the case if you are to put in only plain text and links on the landing page:
what you need to do is first create the page from the admin and then go to
Settings/Reading
and under Front page displays choose the radio button for "A static page (select below)" and then select your specific page from the select-box menu.

Now, if you want a whole new custom look for the landing page you can create a new file in the theme files folder and name it home.php
You can put custom content there which will appear on the landing page only.

Cheers

Hi, I have NewBlue Options them installed and I am using it as content management system and not as a blog.

I am using a landing page instead of having chronological postings.

I am trying to remove the Page # of # at the bottom. I would even like to remove the gray bar that has "# of comments /Posted by/ Categories...

I am assuming it is something simple 'cause I sure as hell can't figure it out.

Minimalism and simplicity of design make sense to me too - if there's too much going it distracts from the text.

What you say should be obvious, but very often isn't, especially on the usability side. It's difficult if, like me, you lack coding skills. I'm learning something new all the time though, and it helps to have good advice from knowledgeable people like <i>you</i> Mayank.

I sincerely appreciate all the advice guys - and I'm taking it all on board. Thanks.

I'm researching everything you mentioned, such as WordPress automatic upgrade and the All-In-One SEO Package.

I'll be starting on it next week - will update you as to how I get on.

I'm so glad I was one of the competition winners, this has made me all enthusiastic  about the technical side of my site again.

@Ikki - I'm glad that you guys are finding the review beneficial.

@Scatterbrain -

Upgrade the wordpress version - You just need to upload the Wordpress automatic upgrade plugin (if at all you can do that) and it does the rest, you don't have to worry about anything.

Pretty permalinks - I'll suggest you to simply create another.htaccess (blank file) and then upload it and do that again :) Else you can also do one thing -> when you try generate the permalink and it fails to update the htaccess file, it gives you the htaccess code, you paste that in a text file, name it htaccess.txt and upload it and then simply rename it to .htaccess :)

Enlarging text - Well, good luck with your course :)

Rest of the stuff - I'm sure once you'll go ahead with all the suggestions, you'll see amazing improvement in traffic (although, it will take it's time..don't expect anything over night).

well, my design taste is also towards minimalist themes however, these days I have to be rational as I have to look at the design sense of various people. Although, I look more at the simplicity of the design and the usability is at the highest priority.

I also give extra priority to the text size and the font. I love themes by pearsonified.com as they are simple and look good as well.

@scatterbrain - Indeed taptaptap.com looks really nice, it's one of the finest examples of amazing design - goes well with the iphone theme.

Well, apart from the obvious Edge theme, which I'm sure can be adapted visually - I personally look first to see if it is visually pleasing with good images, nothing too heavy (clumpy looking).

One that caught my eye recently was this one - http://www.taptaptap.com/ talk about slick!

Hey everybody,

I've been looking for a new WP theme for my blog in the last couple of months but I can't really pick one because I'm too... picky xD

So I was wondering - what do you look for in a WP theme?

I've noted all the improvements that you kindly recommended Mayank. Thanks for reviewing my blog. I'd like to respond to a couple of points:-

Upgrade WordPress Version - I'm eager to do this. My blog is hosted by my brother-in-laws (for free) server which runs on the Debian operating system that uses *packages* to install and upgrade software. My version (2.0.12-alpha) is the latest Debian-Stable package - and I know it is very old. Obviously, I'm looking at alternative UK hosting servers and hope to upgrade very soon.

Pretty Permalinks When I tried to customise my Permalinks, I sent the plugin (htaccess file) to the wrong folder and crashed my site. (My nickname is Scatterbrain for a reason)

As mentioned, I'm going on an Adobe Dreamweaver course on 27th September - so I should be able to make a start the improvements after that.

The same goes for Enlarging Text Size.

As for the rest of the points - I'm ignorant about them all,:???: but will endeavour to learn about them and ensure I get all the relevant plugins.

Your review has given me the necessary impetus (read kick up the backside) I needed to start me optimising my site.
