I highly recommend WP-SpamFree . I needed a solution that didn’t require an API key and this this has been AMAZING! My highest recommendation :o)

@ Mark : I’ve tried Mollom and unfortunately it didn’t impress me much.

@ Carl : Well I hope things are better. I’ve shifted back to Akismet as of now, just to test things around and will surely shift back to Defensio.

Don’t forget Mollom. I’ve read good things about it so it might be worth a try. It was originally developed for Drupal but they have a WordPress plugin nowadays.
