I’ve always backed Arne’s Google Sitemap generator plugin and the reasons are pretty obvious, it’s one of the only XML sitemap generator that follows the guidelines of Sitemaps.org, an noble idea to build standard sitemaps and is supported by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. However, it is highly criticized because of the high memory usage.

I myself pay almost double amount of dollars for running this plugin as many shared hosting companies tend to charge you more, if the resources used by your hosted websites are more than allowed limit. Even though I was feeling the frustration of paying lot of money just for running this script, I had no choice as there was no good alternative.

Thanks to ixiter for developing equally good plugin, however with no configurable options. The plugin generates the xml based sitemap and uses far less memory. The idea of creating the plugin came just because even he was feeling the frustration of high memory usage by Arne’s Sitemap Generator.

Simple Google Sitemap is now on my list of “must have plugins” and replaces the much loved and respected plugin by Arne. Google XML Sitemap plugin will always be one of my favorites, however it will be even better if it starts to be kind of the amount of memory it uses.

  1. Hm, as far as I understand sitemap is generated only when content changes with Arne's plugin. How is runiing it for two seconds (for my blog) per post is high resource usage?

    • Well, the script is actually resource hungry. Try to understand it like this.. .what is your computer's usage when you launch Adobe Photoshop? So every time you make a post, arne's plugin acts as photoshop (in terms of resource usage). Now there are many blogs on webservers and if each of them is running this script, then what will happen to the webserver??

I hope this clears the doubt.

      • I understand that it may add up if there are hundreds sites on same server (as in cheap hositng). But on cheap hosting anything can be called high-resource usage – I had once lost wiki that wasn't even using database and had total of three daily visitors. I may be wrong but tons of plugins that people use at the same time and at each page load are probably creating incomparably more load than sitemap generator.

btw read recently that Google accepts RSS feeds for sitemap, may be esay alternative. Hadn't tried myself yet.

  2. Great article, thanks for the information. In my view sitemaps are critical to getting your site listed in Google/Yahoo etc. correctly.
