I was recently approached by one of our readers and my cousin Amit Gupta. He was facing an issue in writing any posts as he encountered with some problem while upgrading the blog. After diagnosing the issue, I realized that he made a small mistake while doing the upgrade. he forgot to upgrade the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and tried to upgrade the blog with the old version of it.
I should say that he was lucky enough, as he didn’t face any other disastrous issues with his blog and that issue was quite easily dealt with. However, I will always remind everyone to take good precaution while making such changes in any blog. Anyway, here’s what I’ll suggest everyone to do while doing the upgrade -
1. Backup database – Make sure you should make the backup of the database. This can be life saviour in case things go wrong at any chance. Backup of database will ensure that you’ll not loose the major stuff (as far as posts and comments are concerned). Even though, WPAU does that task for you, you should still make the backup of database on your own. You may use WP-DB-Backup plugin for the same.
2. Replace the core files – If the upgrade through WPAU fails, then you should upgrade the core files i.e. all the files in new WordPress version should be replaced with the files currently on the server. Make sure that you shouldn’t replace WP-Content folder at all.
Even if you still face any problems – you should follow the manual way of upgrading the WordPress version and complete all the steps mentioned in the guide.
Apart from that, there are few web hosts that offer the complete backup of the files that are hosted on the server, so if you can do that or if you can get that done from your web hosts customer support, then you should really go for that option as well.
